The Neuroscience of Feeling Safe: How Imagination Influences the Brain

Have you ever imagined yourself somewhere peaceful and noticed your body beginning to relax? Perhaps you pictured a favorite place, remembered a comforting embrace, or imagined being surrounded by warmth and light.

Although these experiences take place in your imagination, the feelings they evoke can be very real.

Our brains have a remarkable ability to respond emotionally to the images we create in our minds. This connection between imagination, memory, and emotion is one reason visualization can be such a meaningful part of guided hypnosis.

Your Brain on Imagination

When you imagine something vividly, your brain engages some of the same neural networks involved in actually perceiving an experience.

For example, imagining a beautiful landscape can activate portions of the visual processing system, even while your eyes are closed.

And imagination reaches beyond what we see. An imagined experience can evoke emotions and sometimes even changes in our physical responses.

Think about biting into a fresh, juicy lemon. You might imagine its bright yellow color, the fragrance of its peel, and the sharp taste of its juice. You may even notice your mouth beginning to water.

The lemon exists only in your imagination, yet your body may respond to the experience.

The Emotional Power of Memory

Our memories contain more than information about past events. They can also reconnect us with the feelings associated with those experiences.

Remembering a moment when you felt confident, supported, or deeply peaceful may allow you to experience some of those emotions again.

Research suggests that recalling positive personal memories can influence mood and engage brain systems associated with emotion and reward.

In Bubble of Protection, you're invited to remember or imagine a time when you felt particularly powerful, calm, or in control.

This is an opportunity to reconnect with those feelings and bring them into your present experience.

Creating a Symbol of Protection

Symbols can give shape to experiences that are sometimes difficult to describe in words.

A protective bubble is one such symbol.

As you imagine its color, texture, thickness, and size, you're creating something uniquely meaningful to you. Your bubble might represent emotional boundaries, inner strength, personal space, or simply a comforting sense of calm.

The bubble is an imaginative symbol rather than a physical shield. Its value lies in the feelings and personal meaning you associate with it.

And those associations can become familiar through repetition.

Within you, there is a place of calm to which you can always return.

Carrying the Experience With You

One of the most interesting aspects of mental imagery is that we can revisit an imagined experience.

Just as a familiar song can remind you of a particular time in your life, a personally meaningful image may help you reconnect with the emotions you associate with it.

With practice, imagining your bubble may become a familiar reminder of the calm, confidence, and inner strength you've experienced before.

And perhaps that's one of the most beautiful possibilities of imagination.

We can use it to reconnect with qualities that are already part of our experience, giving ourselves a gentle opportunity to feel them again.

Your imagination offers a place to begin. Your awareness gives the experience meaning. And your capacity for calm and confidence is something you can continue to nurture.

“There is a quiet strength within you, a place of peace and calm that belongs entirely to you. And wherever life takes you, you can always return to that place within yourself.”
