What Is a Trance State?
A trance state is a naturally occurring state of focused attention and absorption. You may have experienced something similar while becoming completely absorbed in a book, driving a familiar route and realizing you don't remember every mile of the journey, listening to music, watching a movie, or becoming deeply immersed in your imagination. These experiences demonstrate that attention is not always directed outward in the same way. At times, our awareness naturally becomes more focused on our internal experience.
In hypnotherapy, a trance state is intentionally cultivated through techniques such as focused attention, relaxation, breathing, imagery, and suggestion. As attention becomes more concentrated, ordinary background thoughts and distractions may become less prominent. Some people experience physical relaxation, while others experience a sense of mental clarity, vivid imagery, altered perception of time, or simply a pleasant feeling of being deeply focused. There is no single way that hypnosis “should” feel.
Importantly, entering a trance does not mean losing consciousness or giving up control. You remain capable of thinking, responding, and making choices. In fact, hypnosis can be understood as a particular way of directing attention and engaging with internal experience. The goal of hypnotherapy is not to turn the mind off, but to create a state in which a person can work with thoughts, feelings, memories, and automatic patterns in a more focused and intentional way.
